As with all businesses, COVID19 is impacting us.   We have not been selling carp this year.  To support social distancing and protect those in healthcare, first responders and others, we are not taking or filling orders this fall.  We apologize for any inconvenience.  Carl

Welcome to the Bybrook Hatchery LLC Web Site!
ByBrook Hatchery has been a licensed and certified supplier for Virginia and West Virginia Triploid Grass Carp since 1995.  The Hatchery began operations in Ashford, Connecticut in 1960 and opened in VA in Fairfax duriong 1995 and moved to Deltaville VA in 2016.
Grass Carp are used to safely and biologically control pond weeds without the use of chemicals or mechanical intervention.  Triploid Grass Carp have been proven to be effective at controlling most types of aquatic vegetation at farms, golf courses, hospitals, reservoirs, water companies, homeowner associations, office parks, and other ponds or lakes throughout Virginia.  Triploid Grass Carp are considered an exotic (non-indigenous) species and are therefore controlled by the State Department of Game and Inland Fisheries (VADGIF).  Triploid Grass Carp cannot reproduce.  They each have a blood test prior to certification that they are sterile.  They are compatible with other fish, do not eat fish eggs or little fish, and do not muddy the water.
Recommended Stocking Rate
Triploid Grass Carp are normally stocked at 8 per acre for most grasses and leafy aquatic weeds, and 12 per acre if you have duckweed or algae.  Carp don't like to eat lillypads or cattails,  Lake owners must use the percentage of surface water that is weedy in order to calculate an appropriate stocking rate.  Multiply your acreage by the number of carp desired per acre, then multiply by the percent weed coverage to determine your total order.  Overstocking can result in complete elimination of pond weeds, which might be beneficial as cover to other species.
Grass Carp live 4-8 years or more, surviving the coldest winters and hottest summers when the water is deep enough to maintain a good oxygen content and temperatures.   I have had a couple of customers report a carp living 20 years, but I don;t think this should be expected, and their effectiveness definaley goes down as they get older.  They do like to travel in moving water, so it is best to screen your inlet and outlet (see fish barriers on seperate page).  Our fish are 10-12 inches and guaranteed for 5 days in your pond.
Fish may be picked up in Deltaville, or delivery is available for a fee (see Transporting).  Deltaville customers can pick up fish only by appointment.   You can order from us over the phone or by email.  Since we are a part-time business, please provide an evening phone number and email address so we can reach you when we are home.
